Question How can I identify the type of electrified exit device I have? |
Answer 2 white and 2 black wires - This is an ELR (Solenoid operated electric latch retraction) device. It must only be powered by the ELR150 power supply, and a CM150-08 controller for each device. The white wires are the power input – they connect to TB2-1&2 on the controller card. The black wires are the feedback circuit, which connects to TB2-3&4 on the controller card. When the solenoids retract the latch, a switch shorts the 2 black wires, which tells the controller to reduce the voltage across the white wires, to hold the latch retracted without overheating. The output voltage across TB2-1&2 when triggered should be around 40 Volts DC with no load. There should be around 40 volts across the 2 black wires, except for when the latch is retracted. The resistance across the two white wires in the device should be around 3 to 4 Ohms. 2 brown/white and 2 blue/yellow wires - This is an MLR (Motorized Latch Retraction) device. It may be operated by any good 24 Volt power supply, with at least 2 amps output, however the Preferred power supply is the RPSMLR2, which includes a trigger circuit, adjustable time delay, And additional relays for connecting to auto operators, etc. The RPSMLR2 has 2 separate inputs and outputs, to control 2 devices. For 2 devices on a single Opening, the inputs may be connected together, allowing a sequenced output to the devices. The 24 Volt power connects to the 2 brown/white wires (non-polarized). The blue/yellow wires are only required when using the RPSMLR2 power supply, to signal a relay to Close upon the retraction of the latch in the device. If the MLR does not properly retract the latch, it may need to be calibrated. Calibration instructions and troubleshooting are located in the installation manual. 2 brown and gray/green/pink wires - This is an E-Lock – Usually referred to as Electrified Trim This type device is operated by a solenoid in the active case or inside the case of a mortise device. The solenoid controls the operation of the lever trim, and it operates off of 24 Volts DC. The E-Lock may be operated in Fail Safe or Fail Secure Mode. A TCM (Temperature Control Module) should always be wired between the incoming power wiring and the 2 brown wires. The TCM drops the voltage after the solenoid has operated , to prevent overheating. The gray/green/pink wires do not control the operation of the solenoid. Instead, they connect to a Microswitch, which allows them to used as a status indicator for the lock (Locked/unlocked) |
