Answer
PRECISION Surface Vertical Rod Adjustment Instructions
After installing the exit device and latches, or when troubleshooting vertical rod operation, follow the steps below.
Top Rod Adjustment (performed first)
- Keep the rod carriage in the down position and thread the top rod onto the stud until the hole aligns with the bottom of the slot in the top channel.
- Pull the link down until its hole aligns at the bottom of the slot.
- Insert the rod pin through the channel, link, and rod.
- Install the spring clip until it snaps into place.
- Press the touchbar to retract the latchbolt and open the door.
- The latchbolt must stay retracted (holdback). If it does not, remove the clip and pin, rotate the rod counterclockwise one half-turn, reinstall the pin, and retest. Repeat until holdback is maintained.
- Release the top latch from holdback so it fully extends.
- Verify deadlocking (the latchbolt cannot be pushed into the channel). If it does not deadlock, remove the pin, rotate the rod clockwise one half-turn, reinstall, and retest. Repeat as needed, then reinstall the spring clip.
Bottom Rod Adjustment (performed after top rod adjustment)
- With the rod carriage down, thread the bottom rod onto the stud until the correct hole aligns with the bottom of the slot in the bottom channel.
- Lift the rod and insert it into the bolt.
- Insert the rod pin through the channel, bolt, and rod.
- Press the touchbar to place the device in holdback.
- Confirm ¼-inch clearance between the bottom of the bolt and the strike surface. If clearance is incorrect, remove the pin, adjust the rod in or out, then reinstall the pin and spring clip.
Important Notes for Vertical Rod Adjustment
- The standard mounting height is 39-15/16 inches above the finished floor. Non-standard mounting heights may require additional adjustment to ensure proper latching.
- When testing latch retraction with the pushbar or exterior trim, operate the device slowly to simulate worst-case conditions.
